The loser Josnai Wedaesday December IX 2000 OODHEALTH Holiday gifts from the kitchen make special tastier Christmas Once again it's time to start organizing my gift list The easiest thing to do is to pick up the phone or go online While store bought presents are always acceptable home made gifts are considered very special Since in the food busi ness many people expect unusu al items from me A big basket of gifts from the kitchen wrap ped with cellophane and ribbon tied can be so special There are so many themes to choose from or a wine lover a nice set of glasses along with a bottle of bubbly (champagne) is a great idea Throw in some fine cheeses and water crackers or a winter afternoon treat someone on your list to a few nice things for teatime Include in the basket an assortment of preserves and some quick breads better if homemade of course forget a high quali ty imported tea To make the bas ket extra special add a set of cards or a new board game Soup always warms the heart and is another possibility for gift giving If someone on your list in under the weather treat them to a nice assortment of soups Just keep in mind the per ishable ingredients Include the recipes in case they want to make them at a later date When you go away for the holidays you might want to bring with you some ingredients for a popular dish from your re gion riends from Pennsylvania once brought me some of the Dutch treats famous in the Lan caster region or those of you who will be celebrating the first Christmas with a significant other put to gether an intimate supper for two Or get a reservation at his her favorite restaurant Those married with kids can tuck the little ones in and enjoy a simple menu that will allow you to enjoy the evening with as little stress as possible After dinner include a bottle of a nice cordial dessert and some music Al lavors rom My Kitchen YVONNE ORTIZ HANEY though this will not be my first holiday with John include a video of his favorite movie With Christmas falling on a Monday this year you might also consider a in basket This could be a per fect treat for the kids to give Mom Include easy recipes the kids can make themselves We all appreciate a home made gift especially the edible ones Bon appetit Apricot Raisin Jam 1 pound dried apricot halves coarsely chopped 1 cup golden raisins uice and grated rind of 1 lemon 1 cup orange juice 2 cups sugar Place the apricots and raisins in a bowl and add water to cover Cover the bowl tightly and let it stand overnight Drain the liquid into a large heavy saucepan and chop the apricots raisins lemon juice and rind and orange juice to the pan Place over low heat and bring to a simmer Cook 20 minutes stirring occasionally Add the sugar and continue cooking stirring frequently until the mixture of fruit is very soft and the syrup sheets when dropped from the side of a spoon (220 degrees ahrenheit in a can dy thermometer) 15 20 minutes Spoon the jam into sterilized half pint jars Seal the jars pro cess in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes and cool Store in a cool dark place Makes about 4 half pints Banana Pecan Bread 1 stick butter softened 1 cup sugar 2 large eggs 1 cups all purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder baking soda i teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon teaspoon ground cloves 1 i cups mashed very ripe bananas 1 teaspoon vanilla extract cup chopped pecans lightly toasted Preheat the oven to 350 de grees ahrenheit Grease twb 8 by inch or four 5' inch loaf pans In a mixing bowl cream the butter and sugar together then beat in the eggs Into a separate bowl sift together the flour bak ing powder baking soda salt cinnamon and cloves Add this dry mixture to the wet mixture and mix well then beat in the banana and vanilla Stir in the nuts Transfer the batter to the pans and bake until the bread is nicely browned and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean about 1 hour for the larger loaves and 50 minutes for the smaller ones Remove the bread from the pan(s) and cool on a wire rack Store tightly wrapped in a cool place Makes two 8 by 4'a loaves or four 5' by 3 inch loaves Recipes are from "rom My House To Yours by John Hada muscin (Harmony Books 1992) You can reach Yvonne Ortiz Ha ney atflavorsfrommykitchenCajya hoocom BknririBLiiriixEmririi This year send a Santa Gram a Santa Gram?
