I'm excited to share that I have been mentoring 11 incoming freshmen who are majoring in education. These girls are headed towards becoming our future black educators, and I look forward to following their development and accomplishments with great anticipation. Myself and the other counselors have already given them chances to network with influential people on campus. Ennissa Wright

Who is George McLaurin?Simplest answer- "a remarkable individual". He was the first B.lack who made history in 1948 as the first Black man to be admitted to Oklahoma University. Despite this significant achievement, he was subjected to a distressing experience, as he was compelled to occupy a secluded corner segregated from his white counterparts. However, it is worth noting that despite the adversity he faced, McLaurin's name proudly remains on the honor list as one of the top three students in the entire college. He shared his feelings/experience as follows - "'Some colleagues looked at me like I was an a.nimal, no one spoke to me, for tèachers I didn't eveñ exiśt, they ràrely answered my questions. I dedicated so much to myself, that after my teammates started looking for me and teachers started taking me into consideration. I stòpped being invisiblè to them." Let us delve into the profound words of George McLaurin himself. He proclaimed that education possesses a power that surpasses that of weapons. His statement underscores the immense value and transformative potential of acquiring knowledge and intellectual growth. Indeed, McLaurin's sentiment serves as a reminder of the gargantuan impact that education can have on individuals and society as a whole. It is through education that minds are enlightened, horizons are expanded, and progress is achieved. Therefore, let us embrace the power of education and recognize its ability to shape a brighter future for all.(Note-Pic and quotation copied from an unknown source)#education #wisdom #knowledge #emancipation #leadbyexample #ug. #drsandhyatiwari

This is Koren and today is his first day of 5th grade, y'all! I won't lie, when I dropped him off a wave of emotion swept over me, and my eyes started sweating a little bit. Was it tears of joy for all that awaits him in 5th grade OR was it that he is finally back in school I can work in peace?? Perhaps both?! 😜 🤣 #realmomtalk But seriously I've been thinking about the significance of 5th grade and what it represented for me. That year planted the seed of my career in #education. It was the first time I'd ever had a black teacher and I felt so inspired by the impact she had on my life that I decided I wanted to be a teacher "when I grew up". Though it didn't materialize in the classroom in the traditional sense (shout out to all my classroom #teachers...you're changing lives, literally!), I'm grateful it led me on the path I'm on. The point is #careerexploration starts way before we get to high school. It's beyond a curriculum, a program, or an inventory (although these are all helpful). It starts in our homes, classrooms, and offices with everyday conversations or by modeling and making an impact. It certainly is a journey and not a destination and there are many types of vehicles we can take to get there successfully. What do you think we can we can do to better help our children and our students better explore careers early and often in a more organic way? #careerreadiness #careerdevelopment #studentsuccess

Thank you Houston Christian University Candace Desrosiers Mon'Sher Spencer Michael Basquez for the opportunity to speak to our new #Huskies at the sacred BEANIE CEREMONY! I remember this ceremony from my freshman year vividly…. Beanies followed by getting beaten by the upper classmen at the annual tug of war in Holcombe Mall.I shared some of my experiences both during and after HCU, followed by 3 principles I’ve learned since attending the university but WISH I knew when I started school:1. Change is Inevitable: Embrace a Growth Mindset - With the change, unfamiliarity, and newness of starting something new like attending a university, change is exciting AND unnerving. Lean into the newness and embrace curiosity through a growth mindset (per Carol Dweck). Staying humble and curious keeps us open to learn and appreciate new experiences, people, and ideas. 2. Make friends with EVERYONE - This is one of the best times in your life to meet, work with, and learn from people from all walks of life. There’s no better place to build friendships that you’ll keep for a lifetime. In addition to that, remember that your network is your net worth: the person sitting next to you just might help you find a job one day!3. Remember your WHY - It’s easy to get burned out when you’re lost in the minutia of “what:” assignments, homework, exams, extracurriculars, job. Press on by staying connected to your “why.” Why=OTHERS. The point of learning ANYTHING is NOT to become the most actualized version of yourself, to be smart, to be fabulous; the point of learning of anything is to have SOMETHING OF VALUE to offer to others. People=words in sentences. Just like words require other words, sentences, and paragraphs for context and meaning, we have meaning and purpose by offering our gifts and abilities in the service and “context” of others. Welcome to our new Huskies! Dawgs Up! 🤘 #alumni #speaker #freshmen #careeradvice #hcu

If You’re Black or Brown and thinking of going to college, You Still Have Options. But for many, it is considered a privilege and out of reach. Whether you're the first in your family or one of a long line, applying to college can be daunting. While it’s true that some careers require a bachelor’s or graduate degree, there are enumerable good, well-paying career choices that can be had with a two-year associate degree, a certificate program, or a training program or apprenticeship in the skilled trades."𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫:𝐀 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐦 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚𝐟𝐚𝐫, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐮𝐩 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞. 🌟 The Power of Belonging 🌟As I put away my work lanyard for the summer, I can’t help but reflect on the profound sense of belonging it symbolises. Each pin badge tells a story, a chapter of my journey:🎓 TPC Graduate Pin: A proud reminder of where it all began, where I took my first steps in my career.🏛️ Pembroke College Coat of Arms: Representing my time at Oxford, a place that welcomes me into a rich academic and cultural community.🔍 Culture of Curiosity Badge: Given when I presented my research recently at Coleg-Sir-Gar; it signifies the warmth and acceptance I felt, reinforcing my place in scholarly communities. 🟦 Pronoun Badge: From the University of Oxford, where I am pursuing my MSc, this badge affirms my identity and the inclusive environment that supports it.These symbols on my lanyard do more than identify me as a proud member of Truro and Penwith College staff. They highlight where I feel I belong, weaving a tapestry of my professional and personal identity.🧠 Why is Belonging Important? 🧠Belongingness Theory, developed by Roy Baumeister and Mark Leary, suggests that humans have an intrinsic need to belong, to form positive and lasting interpersonal relationships. When we feel connected to a group:Enhanced Well-being: It boosts our mental health and overall happiness.Increased Motivation: We are more driven and engaged in environments where we feel we belong.Higher Performance: A sense of belonging can enhance our productivity and creativity. As I reflect on these badges, I am reminded of the importance of a sense of belonging in all aspects of our lives. It’s more than just feeling accepted; it's about being an integral part of a community that values and supports you. Here’s to celebrating the places and communities that make us feel at home! 🏡💼#Belonging #Community #AcademicJourney #ProfessionalIdentity #Inclusivity #Motivation #WellBeing

Thursdays — the perfect day to wander back in time. Today, I'm throwing it back to my undergraduate days in the Faculty of Law, University of Calabar 😊.Ah! Do you see that bottle of Pepsi clutched in my hand? It's not just a beverage, it's a testament to surviving the "stressful" days, perhaps a life saver in the face of exams and deadlines 😂.Back then, every hurdle felt like scaling a mountain, every triumph was a victory dance, and every friendship was a treasure beyond measure. School was not merely a place, it was a canvas where we painted our dreams.Within those lecture halls, we not only deciphered the complexities of our chosen fields but also discovered the reservoirs of our resilience. Each lecture was a stepping stone and every exam, a milestone 😊.Looking back, I've realized that those years taught me resilience, the importance of curiosity, and the value of true friendships. The memories created then, continue to inspire my journey today. As I revisit these cherished moments, I raise my imaginary glass to celebrate the friendships that stood the test of time, the teachers who shaped our minds, and the dreams that still guide us.Here's to the school days that sculpted us into who we are now 🥂.#TBT #UndergraduateDays #SchoolMemories #LifeLessons #Nostalgia #Friendships #CherishedMoments #UniCal
